The engine of a sailboat is its sails, and we need new ones.

These things are not cheap, for a 41′ boat like our Tartan, you can shell out $4000 – $9000 for a single mainsail. For a budget conscious outfitting like ours, we need to think hard about the cost, it will be one of our biggest purchases.

Make an Easy Duffel From Old Sails

Yesterday I posted about making an old bag out of a genoa sail that was torn up. My first attempt was a bit short and fat, so I wanted to try again. I also want to try to figure out a way to make the hole at the top more waterproof. Here is what I came up with, step by step.

Bags from Old Sails

Our old O’Day 28 came to an unfortunate end on the freeway. The Genoa was torn up a bit, but was still a massive amount of high-tech material. Surely I could make something out of it. I got some great ideas of What can I EASILY make out of an old sail on one of my favorite forums, SailNet. After a couple of hours, I am rather pathetically proud of myself for having made a duffel-type bag and a small ditty toy bag that nests inside.
