Diamond Cay was a strange counterpoint to Great Harbor. Both had a Foxy’s. The one in Diamond Cay is called Foxy’s Taboo and supposedly is run by the daughter of the family. Pretty much, the only building in the beach area is Foxy’s Taboo restaurant, there are no other real buildings. It’s quite new and it’s as if there was just an expansion of the franchise but the character got left behind. I suppose there can only be one original.
There were only about 10 moorings, and when we got there they were all full. Fortunately, on one was our friends on Papillon and they said they would be a couple of hours then leaving. So we headed out to Sandy Spit, a classic Robinson Crusoe island about 200 yards long with a beautiful white beach all around and about 4-5 trees in the middle. We anchored off this post card view and went ashore…..
Only to be greeted by the drunk passengers off a big ass power yacht. You know, the one whose launch is bigger than your boat. The crew had set up a beer tent for the guests and they were loudly playing beer Frisbee. Oh well, so much for picture postcard. The boys friend Tristan drove up in a dinghy and revealed that you can find buried treasure on the island. Pleasure cruises go on ahead and bury it for their customers to find but often some gets left behind. Last time he said he fund two gold doubloons!
Skip forward 90 minutes of digging in the sand.
Simon’s Sailbag
We headed back to Diamond Cay. As we were just motoring we didn’t have the sail up and Simon found a new use for the main sail bag – nesting.
We had a somewhat meh dinner at Foxy’s Taboo. It felt like a McDonald’s Caribbean franchise with not much character. The saving grace is there was a lot of exploring to do. There was another small island you could walk around and the boys were excited about the two dead pelicans they found, or at least the skeletal remains of them. Also there is the “bubbly pool”. A 30 walk round to the north side, the waves “crash in” and make foam in a rock pool. On the day that we went it was more of a foo foo bubble bath, but we could imagine that it would be fun if there was a strong swell from the north.
Diamond Cay gets 4 stars from Sailing With Kids (Not so great for parents, the food is average, but lots to explore for kids, including Sandy Spit)
